Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) – Smarter, Cleaner Fish Farming
Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) are at the forefront of sustainable, land-based fish farming. At Parmar Fish Farming, RAS technology enables us to raise fish in a controlled indoor or semi-enclosed environment while reusing up to 90% of our water.
How RAS Works:
-
Water Circulation
Water from fish tanks is continuously pumped through a multi-stage filtration process and returned clean to the tanks. -
Mechanical Filtration
Solids such as waste and uneaten feed are removed through drum filters or sediment traps. -
Biofiltration
Ammonia (from fish waste) is converted into less harmful nitrate using beneficial bacteria housed in biofilters. -
UV Sterilization or Ozone Treatment
These systems neutralize harmful pathogens to maintain fish health and water quality. -
Oxygenation
Dissolved oxygen is restored using aerators or oxygen cones before water re-enters the fish tanks.
Benefits of RAS:
-
Water Efficiency: Reduces freshwater usage by up to 90%.
-
Space Efficiency: More fish can be raised per square foot than in traditional ponds.
-
Biosecurity: Closed-loop system prevents disease from external sources.
-
Year-Round Operation: Operates efficiently in Alberta’s harsh winter climate.
-
Environmentally Friendly: Minimizes discharge into local water systems.
RAS technology allows Parmar Fish Farming to grow healthy fish faster, using fewer natural resources, with greater control over water quality and health outcomes. It’s a cornerstone of our sustainable aquaculture commitment.
